Luke's Canoe Polo success

Tuesday, May 2019 9:50 AM

Congratulations to Luke who competes in Canoe Polo. During the recent school holidays Luke played in two competitions, firstly in the Australian National Champs where he played in the under 16 ACT team and secondly in the NSW under 21 team. The juniors finished 2nd behind Queensland and the NSW under 21’s finished 4th. The Australian teams were then announced at the end of the National Champs and the Oceana Tournament was played the following weekend at the International Whitewater Centre in Penrith. For Oceania, Luke played in the under 18 age group. It was an incredible experience for him, receiving his team colours and having to customise his boat to Australian team colours. The tournament started on ANZAC Day which meant the opening ceremony was preceded by a moving ANZAC service attended by both the NZ and Australia teams. Playing against New Zealand is at another level as it is a school sport in New Zealand so they have over 3,000 players as compared to Australia where it is a 10th of the size. Despite losing to both NZ teams one of the highlights for him over the weekend was scoring the his first goal and his teams first goal against NZ. Canoe Polo is an amazing sport for kids, high intensity yet very few injuries and in addition, it has a pathway for players to go all the way to World Champs.
